Success starts the same way your season does. From the seed.

Choosing varieties isn’t easy. It’s about performance and finding the right balance of disease resistance, yield potential and other traits suitable for your fields. With so many strong varieties to choose from, picking a canola system with the right set of solutions is just as important to realizing your crop’s potential.

Finding the right fit for your fields.

Here are some factors to consider when choosing your next canola varieties:

Yield: Field conditions aren’t perfect. Pick varieties that deliver consistent yields, even under stressed growing conditions. Look for maturity ratings that best fit your region.

Disease: Older varieties can become less effective as blackleg adapts, so choose varieties rated resistant or moderately resistant in recent years. Look also for resistance to clubroot or sclerotinia if needed.

Weeds: Know the weed spectrum in your fields. Pick a system that allows you to rotate your chemistries and manage the risk of resistant weeds.

Standability: Good standability can help make your harvest easier and more efficient. Plus, less lodging helps reduce the risk of disease.

Maturity: Days to maturity is highly dependent on growing conditions and management practices. Use maturity ratings as guidelines to select varieties for your region and crop plan.

Pod-shatter resistance: Some varieties offer high pod-shatter resistance, facilitating your straight cut and reducing yield loss at harvest.

Contract premiums: Certain varieties offer specialty contract premiums, increasing your opportunities for higher returns. Speak with your retailer for more information.

Next up: Weed Management

Weeds are competitive by nature, taking away water, nutrients and sunlight that your crop needs. And with stacked-trait canola volunteers in the fields, early weed management is more important than ever.
